An intercessor is a mediator between parties; someone who stands in the gap in prayers between persons who have provoked judgment upon themselves. Intercession is prayer to hold back judgment (Psalm 106:23). Intercession is not just prayer; it is also to reconcile the differences between people or groups.
As Christians we are praying for the reconciliation of people to God. We are crying out for mercy for those who have not known Jesus Christ.
Believers who have backslidden are to be interceded for (Galatians 5:7). We are not to allow those who were once in the faith to be lost forever. Do you know a brother or sister who was once in the faith? Pray for them to be restored. A cultist who renounces his membership will still be seek by his former association to return, how much more believers.
There are people who have rejected the gospel who need to be interceded for; for the eye of their understanding to be enlightened. The parable of the sower tells us that the hearts as the wayside are not saved because they have given themselves to the devil (Luke 8:12). As intercessors, we are to pray for the works of the devil to be destroyed concerning them. That the seed, which is the word of God, will abide in their hearts.
Some among us, even in the church are sick because of a sin. James 5:14-15 says,
“Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him”.
The prayers of an intercessor goes a long way in the lives of the sick. You do not have to wait for them to come to you. You can intercede for the sick in your locality, state or nation to be healed by the mercies of God, for their sins to be forgiven.
Jesus when in the flesh showed us a perfect example of intercession on the cross of Calvary. Luke 23:34 says,
“Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots”.
The Holy Spirit also helps us in intercession when we do not know what to pray for anymore as written in Romans 8:26,
“Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered”.
The Holy Spirit dwells in you, therefore the grace and strength to intercede dwells in you. God is pleased with intercessors. Isaiah 59:16 says,
“And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore his arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him”.
God seeks for intercessors. Ezekiel 22:30 says,
“And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none”.
Intercede for all men (1Timothy 2:1-2).
