Having the right knowledge about God and His character is very essential in our walk on earth as believers. The question now is: “how can we have true knowledge about God and His character”? In check of scriptures in explaining God, answers are gotten. Jesus said in John 14:7,
“If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.”
Jesus Christ attached knowing the Father (God) to knowing Him. Why? Jesus gave the answer in John 1:18 saying,
“No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him”.
Jesus Christ came to declare God (Father), that is, He has come to explain who God is, he has come to reveal the true nature of God. Jesus can do the above said because He is the express image of God. Hebrews 1:1-3 declares this that,
“God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;”
Colossians 1:13-15 also says about Jesus,
“Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:”
That is, when we see Jesus Christ, we see God. God is explained in Christ Jesus. If we want to know the character of God, we do not have to look elsewhere but Christ. Anything we see Jesus Christ do displays the character of God. The acts of Jesus explains the nature of God. Any character not consistent with Christ’s actions in his 33½ years cannot and should not be accredited to God.
In the person of Christ Jesus is the personality or character of God explained. Seeing or explaining God outside the person of Jesus Christ is falling into error. Christ came to reveal who God truly is. We honour Christ by honouring what He came to do. Christ and what He came to do is given first place. In Christ, we see the true character of God revealed.
In Christ we see God as a father. Jesus referred to God throughout as FATHER, even in the epistles, God was referred to as the FATHER. John 20:17 says,
“Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my FATHER, and your FATHER; and to my God, and your God”.
Also Ephesians 1:3 says,
“Blessed be the God and FATHER of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:”
As well as 1 John 3:1 which says,
“Behold, what manner of love the FATHER hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not”.
God is a Father to us. We see him as a Father in Christ. Beloved, we will do well to acknowledge and hold on to the fact that we can only understand God in Christ. John 14:6 says,
“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me”.
Jesus is the way to the Father, He is the way to God. In this knowledge, you will do well to desire to know more about Christ and what He came to do. This done in the place of the study of the word and in the place of prayer simply because, we see God explained fully and alone in Christ.
Trust this blessed you in explaining God.
