Peace defined by Wikipedia is “a state of harmony, quiet or calm that is not disturbed by anything at all”. Peace from this definition is referred to as a feeling, a state of mind. It also means that the absence of calmness or quietness shows lack of peace. However, for believers in Jesus Christ, peace is expected to come from a “knowing”, having a knowledge of Jesus.
Believers are told to walk by faith not by sight; walking by faith means walking in the reality of what we know. Our peace is a result of our knowledge of God. Matthew 14: 28-31 tells us about when Peter walked on water. He was able to do this because he had trust (faith) in what Christ had told him. He knew that since Christ told him to meet Him then he could do it. Peter’s walk on water was based on his knowing, the faith he had in Christ. His focus was on Jesus.
If you are sure of what and on who your focus is, you will automatically come into that state of calmness. When you know that your focus is on Christ, you will feel the presence that brings peace and calms storms. That is peace in Christ. Most believers have limited peace to “peace of mind” but have forgotten that peace of mind comes from knowing who your focus is which gives the strength to withstand any circumstance along the way.
The moment Peter looked down to see what was happening around him, he lost his focus. He lost his peace and he started sinking. There was a question of faith.
Apostle Paul in Acts 27:9-10 had peace that he was not worried about the storm they were in, instead he encouraged others to be at peace and not worry. How can a human have so much peace in the midst of a storm? This is because he knew the promise God made to every of His children in Isaiah 26:3 saying,
“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee”.
When your mind is focused on God not your circumstance, you see the good in everything and stay positive. You have peace that you are not moved by anything that happens around you.
Matthew 11:28 says “to cast your burden and you will find rest (paraphrased)”. Rest also means peace, so it means you cast, let go of what is happening, you get rest. As a believer, the moment you lose your focus and focus on the waves; the moment your focus changes then your state of mind changes. You lose your peace and begin to sink.
You don’t always have to feel at peace because there is a quietness. You are to feel peace like Christ did in the middle of a storm (Mark 4:35-41) because of God’s Word. Be rest assured that your peace is certain and continuous as long as your focus is on Christ. Your focus should not shift from Christ if you want to enjoy peace at all times.
Don’t be affected by your emotions.
Focus on Christ, get your peace. Peace is more than a feeling. Choose to have peace at all times; it is a sign of a trusting relationship with God. Peace is more than a feeling, peace is more about a knowing. Know your God.
