Rebellion

Rebellion means opposition or disobedience to someone in authority. It is when you decide to go against what people above you say. Rebellion can be against God and it can be against man. It is also of man’s nature, that is why the first kind of rebellion a man will exhibit is usually against immediate family members especially parents. You don’t teach a child to disobey or grumble or do something contrary to what the parents say, they will always want to have their way. However as children of God, this fruit is not expected to be seen in us.

1 Samuel chapter 15 shows us how God instructed King Saul to kill the Amalekites and everything relating to them, but he went against it and because of it, God took away the kingdom from his hands and gave it to David. 1 Samuel 15:23 says,

“For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king”.

Rebellion can also be likened to disobedience. Wonder why the Bible likened rebellion to witchcraft that is worthy of death. It shows how God despises people who go against His commandments. Rebellion does not happen just like that, it starts within a man’s heart with pride, jealousy or bitterness. Isaiah 14:12-15 says,

“How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north. I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.”

When Lucifer rebelled against God in Heaven, he didn’t just wake up one day and decide to overthrow God, it started with pride. He believed himself to be like God or even greater than Him, but what happened to him, he was casted out from Heaven. As big as the word rebellion may sound, the way it occurs may be so little but its consequences is very severe.

Job lost everything he ever worked for – his family and property. Job wife told him to curse God but he didn’t, he remained loyal to God and God restored everything Job lost in multiple folds. Abraham was very old with no child, still his faith in God did not waver and it was counted to him for righteousness. Daniel and the three Hebrew boys lost their home and were taken to an enemy’s land, but they refuse to go against His commandments, and God made them much better than their mates.

God is slow to anger and full of mercy (Psalm 103:8), but note that you may rebel against man and get away with it but you can’t rebel against God and go scot free. Proverbs 17:11 says,

“An evil man seeketh only rebellion: therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him”.

No matter how religious you are, if your actions are not done out of obedience to His words, then your actions are nothing and irrelevant to Him. That is why the Bible says in 1 Samuel 15:22 that, “obedience is better than sacrifice”. Obedience to His words and instructions is very important and it is better than engaging in religious activities.

Rebellion happens when the situation is not favourable to us, but one thing we should know is that we have the Holy Spirit in us waiting and willing to help us. All we have to do is ask Him to help us purify and heal our hearts. We should also continue to trust and believe in God in any situation we find ourselves in. That is what is called FAITH.
