Should I ask for a sign from God?

A sign is a gesture or action used to convey information or an instruction. A sign from God is a form of second confirmation to answers received after praying.

As believers, the answers we get from God comes with a confirmation to make us really know that it is from God. Often times, we do not tend to ask for signs from God because the answers we receive or think we receive from God matches what we want to hear. They may seem positive and not harmful or difficult to do at all but once the answer seems like an “impossible” task to do, we begin to seek for confirmations. We begin to ask for signs from God just to discard that answer.

In the Old Testament, Moses asked for a sign at the burning bush and gave excuses as seen in Exodus 4:1-17 because what God told him to do seemed impossible. Asking for a sign because the instruction you get seems difficult simply shows how much faith you have in God. This action was also displayed by many others in the Old Testament such as Gideon (Judges 6:33-40).

The request for a sign began to reduce when these prophets built a relationship with God, when they had personal revelations of God. This built their faith in Him.

A thriving relationship with God inputs so much trust in you that you do not need to ask for signs when you are sure the answer you got is from God irrespective of how impossible it might look. Your level of trust in God is seen in the way you handle the instructions He gives you.

Asking for a sign in itself is not bad but asking for a sign out of fear or because you want to run from the task makes it bad. This is so because it gives the impression that you don’t trust God and you are doubting His ability to bring what He has said into fruition.

The “why” behind your request for a sign changes the perspective of the request; it either shows a lack of faith or the presence of faith.

As believers, we are expected to believe every answer from God (as long as we are sure it is from Him) and act on it whether you get a sign or not.

Asking for a sign from God just shows how much of a limit you have put on God and what He can do. It shows how much trust you have in Him. Asking for a sign shows how reluctant you are to putting your flesh to the cross and doing what God wants. Asking for a sign from God simply means that you are putting your fears over your faith which is not expected of a believer to do.

2 Corinthians 5:7 says that, “We walk by faith, not by sight”, which means that our focus is not on the process or on how things will go but our focus is on God. How He will do what He has planned to do.

So rather than ask for a sign to confirm, just do what God wants and you will get the confirmations as you go by what He told you.

Hebrews 11:6 says,

“But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him”.

To please God, do His will without questioning Him

  1. This is awesome.

Most times when people ask for sign it’s not out of affirmation but out of fear and I believe the very first step to an answered prayer is believing it has been answered.
