Ephesians 1:18 says,
“The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints”
The human being is unique among all of God’s creation because he is a tripartite being meaning he has three distinct natures in his make up (body, soul and spirit) and hence has the capacity to operate out of any of them.
The same way your physical body has eyes so does your soul man and spirit man. The eyes in your soul man are called the eyes of understanding because your soul is the seat of your understanding (the soul is made up of the mind, will and emotions). The phrase “eyes of your understanding being enlightened” means that the eyes of your soul will be flooded with light.
Biological scientists have proven through research that the eyes are able to produce vision for us by interpreting light in the form of signals which the brain can understand. In other words, the more light you have the better you can see.
The difference between one believer and the other is their extent of access to the illuminating light of the Holy Spirit. Blindness is dangerous particularly for a believer. The kingdom of God is rich with limitless possibilities and what you have access to is only what the Holy Spirit has revealed to you by illumination (1 Corinthians 2:12).
1 John 1:1 says,
“That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life”;
This is not tautology. There is a difference between what we have “seen with our eyes” and what we have “looked upon”. What we see with our eyes is physical and what we look upon is spiritual. However, in this kingdom it is only what we have looked upon that we can handle.
To understand how spiritual illumination works, Ephesians 1:17-18 says,
“That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints”
The above scriptures are prayers that Apostle Paul raised over every flock of believers which he had apostolic oversight. He had prayed it over another church (Colossians 1:9). In this case he prayed for the church of Ephesus to receive the spirit of wisdom and revelation. You see Paul the apostle of Jesus Christ saw it as a necessity for every believer to pray to God to receive the spirit of wisdom and revelation once they were born again and established in faith and love.
And though all believers receive some level of illumination which enables us to be born again in the first place (2 Corinthians 4:3-6), if we want to continually walk in deeper and greater levels of spiritual illumination we must pray for the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Jesus Christ. That shows that believers dont automatically have the spirit of wisdom and revelation at work in their lives from the point of salvation. You wouldn’t have to pray for it if you already had it.
Pray the eyes of your understanding be enlightened.
