Only a child of God can walk in the Spirit. Such declaration is made by an individual who understands that he has just one life. By one life, I don’t mean one life as opposite to dying once. I mean such an individual live as a spirit in this world. Every other aspect of life which people call “political life, social life, academic life” etc are all under the Spirit life. Thus, the standard of your spirit life is made manifest in all.
Galatians 5:25 says,
“If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit”.
To walk in the Spirit is as a result of you having to live in the Spirit first. Also, to live in the Spirit does not mean walking in the Spirit. This also means that a person can be said to live in the Spirit but not walk in the Spirit. Read through Galatians 5:25 again if you need to to see what I am talking about.
An unbeliever in Jesus does not live in the Spirit. The Spirit of an Unbeliever is dead to the things of God and can only come alive to “live in the Spirit” at the point of repentance. That’s why Romans 8:13-17 speaks about your life in the Spirit as a Child of God.
To live in the Spirit is not the end point. It is just the point of joining the race. The point of joining the race and remaining in it to the end is what we will be dwelling on – and that is to Walk in Spirit.
What does it mean to walk in the Spirit? In the simplest of definitions, I would say, “to walk in the Spirit is to have a continuous fellowship with God”. To walk in the Spirit makes you know more of God and His Word which in turn helps you know about yourself. You get to know about yourself because the one who made you guides your path. The immediate statement above encapsulates a lot of things. One of them which is very beneficial to walk in the Spirit is that you will not fulfil the lust of the flesh (Galatians 5:16).
Earlier I said the point of salvation is a point of a start to life in the Spirit. Right? If a person does not have a walk forward (which is to walk in the Spirit), such person will not be too far from going back into the sin that was just put aside. Reading through Luke chapter 8, we find the Parable of a Sower. It talks about four types of ground where seed fell upon. The seed is the Word of God while the grounds are the different types of hearts of people. The second kind of heart in the parable is as a rock, just as one who believed in the gospel of Jesus and after a short while goes back to this sin. This is so because the seed lacked moisture and had no root. The moisture and the root is just to say the place of the Word of God in such a life.
To walk in the Spirit will make you not long or desires for the lust of the eye, lust of the flesh, and the pride of life. When you walk in the Spirit, your mind is renewed at all times. This is because your heart is guided by the Word of God and the Word of God has become a lamp unto your path (Psalm 119:105). The life you lived before you got born again is a sharp contrast to your new life. Therefore, you can’t afford to continue in the same pattern as the old life. That is why you need to walk in the Spirit.
Remember your flesh is still there as a body. It will be contrary to the Spirit. Galatians 5:16-17 is my witness on this. Let me tell you how to check yourself to know if you are walking in the Spirit. Romans 8:5 says,
“For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit”.
What are you mindful of the most? The things of the Spirit or the things of the flesh? When last did you open your Bible to study on your own accord to know your God? When last did you pray without someone tapping you not to sleep as the prayers were on going? Or should I say, when was the last time you prayed on your own? When last did you evangelise?
Oh! You may say we are staying home and that is an hindrance to evangelize. I then ask you that when last did you tell someone about Jesus over a social media platform? If you do not walk in the Spirit, you will not be mindful of the things of the Spirit. Permit me to ask you this. When was the last time you thought about the second coming of Jesus?
Beloved, walk in the Spirit by a continuous daily fellowship with God. This is possible through studying and meditating on His Word. Praying also is very essential. When you pray, expect a response from God. To walk in the Spirit, evangelise. What evangelism does to you is to keep you on check at all times because you may have preached Christ at the place you are; you will soon preach Christ where you are; your life will become a message to bring others to Christ.
Walk in the Spirit.
